The Freeport City Council meetings just never seem capable of being able to run without some form of controversy ... or incompetence. At 7:20, a phone went off, and many people were looking around the room trying to make sure it wasn't theirs and to see where it was coming from. It turned out it was Council Member Larry Sanders who's phone rang, but ... in a move that seems to boggle the mind, he not only answered it, but then proceeded to text on it while the meeting was going on. Now,...

One Sunday a grandma came to church with two of her grandsons who were about 13 and 15 years old. We hit it off right away and invited them all over for Sunday dinner and football. Grandma liked Westerns better than football, so she passed on the invitation and went home and watched John Wayne movies instead, but the boys were happy to come over. They were good kids but had no farm experience so when 5 o’clock rolled around and we told them we had to go out and do chores, they were very c...
Nobody ever likes being sick, but … on occasion … there are some benefits. Big bought with the flu? You end up losing a few pounds. Stuffed up nose? You miss out on some of the uglier smells our world has to offer. Anyway, For almost a month I had been dealing with what – at this point – my wife and I are convinced was probably Covid. Massive chest congestion, that has improved a great deal, but is still not totally gone. Part of the “illness” was a massive amount of nasal congestion,...
I don’t remember March 5, 1944. I am sure my late mother Katherine would have. It is the day I entered this world. It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize that was 80 years ago. I’m now operating completely by the late Toby Keith song “Don’t Let The Old Man In.” Apparently, his inspiration for that song was from Clint Eastwood, age 93, and still a favorite Hollywood actor and director. I truly recognize how blessed I am. So many contemporaries have passed to the “great beyond” and m...

Every time I walk down a certain aisle at Menards, the stud finders go crazy! I’m all set to start my weekend home renovation project, and my wife is all set to call 911. I love home improvement. Best one I ever made was disconnecting the doorbell. It’s over 40 years old … that’s 160 in toilet years. Just go buy a new one. Some homes have a big backyard for rest and relaxation. I’ve got a giant dog toilet that I have to mow. Honey, we need a new stove. This one’s beginning to burn oil. My husband can’t do a do-it-yourself project. All...
To keep young minds active during the summer break from school, Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) is offering first through sixth grade students from the 45th District an opportunity to participate in his summer reading program. “Summer reading is a key factor in the achievement gap between struggling and successful students, and those who do not read over the summer can lose as much as three months of reading comprehension skills,” said Chesney. “The ‘summer slide’ is a real thing, and it’s never too late to instill a love a reading in...
It’s no secret that Governor JB Pritzker is the most liberal governor our state has ever seen. After all, he made Illinois the abortion capitol of the United States and brought us mandatory LGBTQ curricula in schools, free healthcare to migrants and illegal immigrants, and the SAFE-T Act, which eliminated our cash bail system. The Governor is also responsible for appointing people to serve on a little-known panel called the Prisoner Review Board (PRB), a 15-member group that serves as I...
Once again, what was scheduled to be a Pre-trial hearing turned into a continuance in the Stephanie Broshous trial in Stephenson County. Only this time, it was the prosecution looking for more time as additional interviews need to be scheduled, and financial records examined – all of which will take some time as the process is slowly grinding its’ way to an actual trial. The next status hearing is now scheduled for July 25th, but trial dates are expected to be set at that time. We’ll keep you p...

Baseball Lena-Winslow 12 Galena 5 The Pirates were effectively shutting the Panthers down, and held a solid 3-0 lead going into the top of the sixth inning, but that's when Lena-Winslow woke up. Miles Mahon recorded the only extra base hit in the game for the Panthers – a double – but the flood gates opened as Lena-Winslow scored six runs in each of the final two innings to blow the game open in spite of making six errors in the field as Galena never scored an earned run. Mahon, C. Lynch, and...
