  • Where Are They Now

Amendt Opens Strong Former Lena-Winslow Panther, Max Amendt, threw five innings of shutout baseball on the mound for the Trinity International University Trojans in their opening game of the season against the Grace College Lancers in Hoover, Alabama. Amendt, a sophomore, struck out three, while only walking one over his five innings of work – without giving up an earned run – but he did not get a decision in the game as the Trojans fell 2-1 on a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 5, 2023

As a child, my parents rarely missed taking me and my siblings to church on Sunday morning. By rarely, I mean, I don’t recall ever missing a single Sunday. We always dressed up in our Sunday best which meant our shoes were polished on Saturday night, mom laid out our clothes for Sunday morning, and after chores, we jumped into our best duds and rushed off to church in our family station wagon. On Easter, we dressed just a little nicer with perhaps a new pair of socks or a necktie. There’s a fam...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Apr 5, 2023

Maybe it was the continuous cold weather. Maybe it was the fact that we still had traces of snow in our backyard. Or maybe it was because I hadn’t really gone anywhere or had any “Dan time”. Whatever the reason, I am not ashamed to admit that I had been in a funk. Not a depression, but just a feeling of ‘here we go again’ that I needed to break out of. Kind of like in the movie City Slickers, where the main character was told by his wife to go find his smile again. Well, in my case, there is one...

  • Lighter Side

    Apr 5, 2023

Easter Egg Hunts are proof that your child can find things when they really want to. Easter Eggs hide because they’re a little chicken. I’m looking for an adult Easter Egg Hunt. Instead of plastic eggs and little pieces of candy, they hide glasses and cans of cold beer. If you see a rabbit laying little brown eggs, don’t eat them, that’s not chocolate. There’s not point in hunting for Easter Eggs in my house. The only bunnies around here are dust bunnies. Each year at Easter my mom would send us out into the yard with baskets. Then she’d loc...

  • Leaders Of Tomorrow

    Apr 5, 2023

Giving back to your community gives you a sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for what you have. The Stephenson County 4-H Ambassadors helped plan and then led or assisted with the workshops at the 4-H Super Saturday at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau office on March 4. Being a 4-H Ambassador means helping promote 4-H and encouraging...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Apr 5, 2023

Many say the only constant in life is change. We see this as businesses continually adapt to remain competitive and profitable, and schools respond to economic trends to produce graduates that can succeed at jobs many of us never thought would even exist when we were young. While the rate of change can be dizzying, one thing that will never change is the value and importance of the Illinois farmer. I was born and raised in Northwest Illinois, home to several of the more than 70,000 farms in...

  • Broshous Trial Update

    Apr 5, 2023

On Thursday, March 30, a Status hearing was scheduled for the Stephanie Broshous trial taking place at the Stephenson County Courthouse. A Status Hearing is basically when both parties – the prosecution and defense – appear before the judge to ensure that progress is being made on a resolution. For example, all discovery materials have been given to the defense by the prosecution, or there are negotiations for a plea deal being made, etc. In short, it is for the court to be sure that neither side is dragging their feet and the defendant is get...

  • Area Round Up

    Apr 5, 2023

Baseball Eastland 9 RR/SM 5 It was supposed to be a post-season preview as RR/SM and their ace, Maddux Knauer, paid a visit to Lanark to take on Eastland and their ace, Max McCullough. Unfortunately, the Wildcat defense didn't make the trip. The Wildcats made six errors in the first inning alone, accounting for five Eastland runs. And ended up with nine errors in the game as they gave one away on the road. Both teams had seven hits in the game, but the best game belonged to Cole Huber of...
