  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 29, 2023

On its’ face, the upcoming election for the Lena-Winslow School Board seems pretty cut and dried – four candidates are on the ballot, and there are three open seats. So, naturally, you have four people competing for three seats. But, that’s not true. Due to the antiquated form of electing board members that Lena-Winslow has been unable to change the past two elections – there are not four candidates competing. John Leuenberger lives near Winslow, which is a separate district. And he is the onl...

  • Shrek A Good Start

    Dan Stevens|Mar 29, 2023

Replacing a long time and beloved theater director at a small school is never easy, and while there were several areas that will undoubtedly be improved upon in the years to come, Stockton's production of Shrek proved to be a solid first effort for new director Brian Thompson. First, let's hit the highlights – costuming was amazing. From the pint sized Farquaad to all of the Fairytale characters ... I know a lot came from the Byron Civic Theater, but still – it was great! I was also really imp...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 29, 2023

It seems like election season never ends. A few decades ago, when my wife and I first reached voting age, we were living in California and the voters in our precinct voted in our neighbor’s garage, which was the official venue. After we got home from work on election day, we took a stroll down the street, chatted with the neighbors, flashed our driver’s licenses, cast our ballots and walked back home. I suppose, there was a lot of emotion and rhetoric somewhere during the candidates’ campaigns,...

  • Lighter Side

The problem with lawyer jokes is that lawyers don’t think they’re funny, and no one else thinks they’re jokes. Every time lawyers tell their same old jokes, they end up arguing over copyright infringement. In the future, you should have been taught in law school to say “I object” instead of “That’s total bull%$@#.” I’m really sorry your honor, and I promise I’ll never get caught again. The difference between a lawyer and a heard of buffalo is that the lawyer charges more. Your honor, my client requests the opportunity to try a different sto...

  • Farm Bureau Beat

    Victoria Hansen|Mar 29, 2023

For the last few weeks, I’ve had the phrase “run, run, Rudolph” stuck in my head. Nearly every time I was thinking about the Bruce Johnson Memorial Farm To Farm 5K/10K run, I would hear “run, run, Rudolph” in my head. Unfortunately, Rudolph won’t be joining us on Saturday, April 1 for the 6th Annual Bruce Johnson Memorial Farm To Farm 5K/10K Run, but we hope you will. This event raises money for Ag In The Classroom efforts in our county. A few highlights of this event include farm animals, Ag...
