  • The Never Ending Drama

    Dan Stevens|Mar 23, 2022

Once again, the question regarding Stephenson County's Walnut Acres nursing Home was on the agenda at the County Board Meeting Thursday night. Once again, several people showed up with their signs of support, and pleaded with the Board not to close the facility with questions about "How much is human life worth?". And yet, once again, the issue remains unresolved. The biggest problem surrounding the facility is that it has been chronically mis-managed for years – not only by administrators w...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 23, 2022

Lately I’ve been reporting on the story of a ministry in Romania that has been taking in Ukrainian refugees as they flee their war torn country. The work of this mission has been on-going. The pastor in Romania, who is a personal friend of ours, opened his campus to receive these refugees. A group of 70 children were first to come. A few days later they moved on to a safe home in Germany. Within hours, another group of children, moms and grandmothers arrived totaling about 50 people. Some of t...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 23, 2022

What you are reading right now is both my greatest treasure, as well as the biggest bane of my existence. “I love your column!” If I had a dollar for every person who said that … well … I might be able to buy lunch. (At least a Happy Meal) But, in all seriousness, I know a lot of people read this, and it is for that very reason that it causes me so many headaches – I don’t want it to suck. (Admittedly, it often does – I know that.) I have used my column to go off on a personal tirade agains...

  • Not So Fast Sheriff

    Dan Stevens|Mar 23, 2022

Sheriff Dave Snyders has already made it clear that he is leaving his office after his announcement not to run for another term. But even though he is on his way out, that apparently doesn’t mean he isn’t still trying to pull a few fast ones before he turns in his keys. The County decided it was time to make some significant improvements to the Stephenson County Jail, Public Safety Building and Stephenson County Courthouse. So, an RFP (Request For Proposal) was designated to put the pro...

  • The Lighter Side

    Mar 23, 2022

I better take my car into the shop. The funny noise it used to be making has turned into very clear whining and whimpering. Thank you for the repairs, hopefully it won’t take me as long to pay the bill as it took you to wait on the parts you needed. That’s funny, my “check wallet” light comes on every time a mechanic gets near my car. “Yep, your car is broke,” the mechanic said. “I could fix it, but then you’d be broke.” “You say your car is making a grinding sound? Hmm. Maybe it needs a new paint job.” My insurance company wants me to get thre...

  • Legitimate Primary Election In June

    Todd McKenna|Mar 23, 2022

Primary election season in Stephenson County usually is just a formality and more often than not lacking in any excitement or drama as candidates go through the motions to get to the main event in November. That all changed this year as there are no less than five contested races awaiting voters when they head to the polling places on June 28. In fact, one race in particular will see five people square off trying to win seats on the County Board to represent District G. Since it's the primary...

  • Keep Your Pets Safe ... And Legal

    Mar 23, 2022

If an Animal Control Officer finds your pet, and your pet is wearing a current license tag on its collar, Animal Control will contact you. If another citizen finds your pet with its license tag, they will be able to contact the Jo Daviess County Animal Control Department by calling the phone number on the license tag. Animal Control will then, in turn, contact the owner. If your pet has been lost, Animal Control recommends that you contact them immediately. There is an advantage of registering your dog with Jo Daviess County Animal Control. In...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Mar 23, 2022

Public trust in Illinois state government is at an all-time low following the recent indictment of former House Speaker Mike Madigan on 22 counts of federal racketeering charges that detail how he used his official simultaneous positions as Speaker of the House, Chicago’s 13th Ward Democratic Committeeman and Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois to run a criminal enterprise for more than a decade. I was one of the three original petitioners to begin the process of investigating the c...

  • Area Run Down

    Dan Stevens|Mar 23, 2022

Baseball Forreston 6 Lena-Winslow 1 The Cardinals jumped on top of Drew Streckwald in the first inning, then used three different pitchers to hold off the Panther bats, with a combined 12 strikeouts in order to claim the non-conference victory at home. The Panthers had five hits in the game, while Forreston only had seven, but the Cardinals were able to group their hits together, while one critical error opened the door for what ended up being a four-run inning in the bottom of the third for...
