Good morning Dan I wanted to send a note to thank you for all your coverage of the Scales Mound Hornets this basketball season. As you know more than anyone, local small school sports coverage is pretty minimal these days. Scales Mound doesn’t always get much press from the Journal Standard, Telegraph Herald or Galena Gazette. Once the boys reached state, they stepped it up but the great thing about you Dan is you are always there. You have covered the Hornets in the good times and bad as well as all of the other small schools out there all s...

  • Voices All Area Basketball Team

    Dan Stevens|Mar 22, 2023

The coaches have all announced their picks for All Conference Honors, and it is now our turn top reveal the players we chose to be on our 2023 All Area Team. Once again, we have to point out that these selections are based on what we saw this season – not statistics. So, there is always a chance that the best scoring player on a squad had off nights when we were there – it happens. But, from what we saw, our choices include: Player of the Year Thomas Hereau – Jr – Scales Mound For much of the se...

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 22, 2023

Last week my wife and I were on vacation in Florida. Our daughter who lives in Tennessee joined us and we made a week of it. The first thing we did was pick her up at the airport and then we went straight to The Melting Pot restaurant. The Melting Pot is not only good eating, but it’s also entertainment. It starts out with a bowl centered on top of your table with a stove burner under it. When the waiter comes, he turns on the burner and pretty soon it’s sizzling hot. He then dumps some shr...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 22, 2023

Just when you are convinced the world is a cold and heartless place, something comes along to convince you otherwise. I was having a bad weekend – really bad. The schedule itself had me in a sour mood. I left Wednesday afternoon for Champaign and spent the night with my cousin, before going to Assembly Hall to cover the Hornets play their semi-final match against Tuscola. To begin with, the IHSA had not gotten my email, so there were no credentials waiting for me at Assembly Hall. But f...

My mechanic said it would cost $300 to fix the squeak my car’s engine was making, so I decided to just play my Iron Maiden CD really loud to drown out the noise. I don’t know what’s wrong, but if you open and close the hood like this, It looks like your car is talking. You can tell he’s an auto mechanic – he washes his hands before going to the bathroom. I’m sorry Mr. Stevens, but the only service I can give your car is a funeral service. I certainly hope it doesn’t take me as long to pay your bill as it did for you to get the part my car n...

  • Highland Speech & Debate Winners

It was a historic performance for the Highland Community College Speech and Debate Team with a strong showing at the state tournament on March 3-4 at Northern Illinois University. The team has met with success over the season and looks forward to the regional and national competition. "I am beyond proud of Highland's performance at the Illinois Intercollegiate Forensics Association (IIFA) State Tournament," said Speech Team Coach and Advisor Harry Bodell, a speech communication instructor. • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Mar 22, 2023

A primary responsibility of state government is to protect those who otherwise cannot protect or take care of themselves. Sadly, in too many cases, the State of Illinois is failing these most vulnerable citizens and their families. In Northwest Illinois, we are far removed from the atrocities that have been uncovered at the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center in the southern Illinois community of Anna. But with the state-run Mabley Developmental Center located nearby in Dixon, you...
