Kudos go out to the Dakota Indians and the amazing season they had, which may have ended in the Sectional final, but they were still the last area team standing and earned that privilege. And while Indian Creek finally met reality in the Super Sectional as Aurora Christian laid a beat down on them, it is now time for the post season honors to be awarded. So ... without further adieu we present, the Voices All Area Team. Player of the Year Benjamin Vandigo, So – Scales Mound We know, he's only a...

I only found out the week of the show, but I was thoroughly looking forward to seeing Orangeville's production of the Neil Simon Classic, the Odd Couple last weekend. I honestly had no idea, other than Timber Oakes, who the Broncos would have to perform as leads, but ever since he took over a couple of years ago, Joseph Davis has done wonders as Director of the Bronco program. And the fact that they were going to put on a classic comedy only added to the excitement – so what if I knew most of t...
Timber Lake Playhouse (TLP), the premier professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, opens its doors in March this year with the first of eleven concerts in the 2020 season. “We’re excited about starting our concert season earlier this year,” said Dan Danielowski, TLP Executive Director. “Since we winterized the theatre last year, we going to take advantage of the opportunity to host events during the winter and early spring.” On Friday night, March 20, Zachary Stevenson comes to TLP. The Buddy Holly Concert is dynamite two-act s...
Living in our little corner of Northwest Illinois, not much really makes a big impact on our everyday lives. Sure, we might have a storm come through, and seasonal flooding can be a royal pain in the ass, but overall … things tend to be business as usual. But that’s no longer the case. With the onset of the Coronavirus, every one of us was impacted last week. The first major clue that “Dorothy, were not in Kansas anymore,” was when all of the major sporting events throughout the country were ca...
Fear and Panic The world is a mess. I don’t have to tell you. There’s pandemic panic, there’s financial turbulence with the stock market, people are still digging through the rubble in Tennessee - everyone it seems, is dealing with loss. If you have been reading the headlines the past few days, you may have wondered whether the world is coming to an end: “Stock Market Bloodbath”; “Anxiety grips companies across the world as virus spreads”; “Italy extends its quarantine to the entire country...
What started out as the postponement and cancellations of sporting events on television, came home to our corner of Northwest Illinois as Illinois shut down the schools, the casinos, banned events with more than 1,000 attendees for the next 30 days and urged businesses to allow employees to work from home. Naturally, the general public's first reaction was to get mad. Then, also predictably, they got a bit crazy. A run on the grocery stores in Freeport was so intense that stores ran out of... Village Voices wasn’t the only outlet asking questions when the official press release regarding Lowell Crow leaving as City Manager was first released. A second release was sent out Tuesday, March 10, which – if we had been in charge of Public Relations for the City of Freeport – should have been sent in place of the first one, which was so full of holes. The new one reads: On March 9, 2020, the City Council of the City of Freeport, Illinois accepted the resignation of Lowell Crow as the City...
Before you misread that headline, the annual Voice Awards are still on and set to be presented on March 6th beginning at 7:00 pm at the Masonic Temple in Freeport. However, due to the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament, our biggest fund raiser for the Voice Awards – our NCAA Tournament Party – has been cancelled. For all of the Advertisers who have not yet sent in your entry fee – don't. And for those who have, we are applying the fee to your advertising account here at the Voices so you will...
People throughout the United States can begin filling out their census forms online starting Thursday, and state officials in Illinois are pulling out all the stops to make sure the state gets an accurate headcount. Between March 12 and March 20, about 95 percent of all households in the country will receive a postcard in the mail inviting them to fill out their census form online or by phone in their language. “The census is only nine questions – nine questions that impact every single per...

Since acquiring the 150-acre Addition to Horseshoe Mound from the Richardson family in late 2018, volunteers and staff from the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) have been working hard to restore the historic oak and hickory woodland that once thrived on the western slope that is visible from Hwy 20. When JDCF acquires a property, they establish a wildlife habitat restoration plan to return native, historic Illinois habitat to the land. For over a year, volunteer crews and JDCF staff...
