  • Dancin' At The Mound

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

During the "media" timeout in the third quarter of the battle between Aquin and Scales Mound, the frosh-soph members of the Hornet basketball team were standing outside the huddle as Coach Kudronowicz talked strategy with the varsity ... and danced. It didn't matter what music was being played – Michael Jackson, Country, Pop ... the younger Hornets were having fun shaking their booty to the tunes. "Hey, that's how we do it up here at the Mound," said Kudronowicz after the Hornets had rallied b...

  • One In, One Out

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

The River Ridge Wildcats had just recently lost their scoring leader as Caden Albrecht was still out after suffering a high ankle sprain in the win over West Carroll. That loss of offensive talent made scoring difficult – especially against a solid defensive team like Stockton. Meanwhile, Stockton had just gotten their big man back as senior Bryce Smith was gutting things out in spite of having missed almost a full year of sports due to a torn knee ligament. "He told me that this was the only s...

  • Whirlwind Season Winding Down

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

With only 34 seconds to go in the game, the Lena-Winslow Panthers were down three to Pecatonica on the road. Coach Dennis Huttenlocher set up an in-bounds play that got the ball to senior Sadie Mowery who drained the three point basket to tie the game at 36-36. Without missing a beat, Mowery then got a steal with only 21 seconds remaining, and was fouled – putting her at the line where she made one of two free throws to give the Panthers the lead at 37-36. Pecatonica still had one last c...

  • Noble Effort

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

Pandemic or not, you never know when you will walk in and get to see an epic basketball game unfold before your eyes. Seeing a 32 point triple double effort out of Tiana Timpe was exciting, but seeing Corrina Noble of Galena light up the nets for ten – yes ten – three point baskets was jaw dropping. On top of that, you had a new freshman sensation in the form of Galena's Taylor Burcham scorch the nets for 28 points of her own ... Oh, and did I mention the game went into triple overtime? Take two...

  • Your Voices

    Mar 10, 2021

Editor; There have been some rumblings lately about the censure of some individuals on Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, etc. These social media platforms were developed by individuals and became popular to massive thousands, so I am assuming if they desire to censure some individuals, they have that right. Back in my day in the 70s, 80s and 90s social sites did not exist (neither did smart phones) so if I wanted to complain or provide my point of view, I would write a letter to the newspaper as I am doing now. Not all of my letters would become pub...

  • The Lighter Side

    Mar 10, 2021

If you wear your jeans for five straight days, they become all baggy and it looks like you're losing weight. You don't need to carry a gun for protection, just carry a fork. Then if someone tries to rob you, whip out the fork, scream, "Thank you God for this meal you have provided," and run straight at them. This must have been the weather our parents walked to school in. I finally found a way to get people to stop asking me questions ... I answer back in interpretive dance. I can't wait to tell my grandchildren that "Back in my day, there was...

  • Stockton FFA Week

    Hannah Brudi|Mar 10, 2021

During the week of February 22nd, the Stockton FFA Chapter celebrated National FFA Week. There were dress-up days for every day of the week, which included Blue and Gold Day, America Day, Chapter T-Shirt Day, Camo Day, and Flannel Friday. We had various activities throughout the week. On Tuesday, we had Ag Olympics, which included four areas of competition. We started with the obstacle course, where members had to go through an obstacle course made of straw bales while carrying a watermelon....

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 10, 2021

Our first cell phone was a bag phone for the car. At that time our kids were little and we were taking a cross country trip and it just seemed like a good idea to have a phone in the car. I remember the first call I received. It was from our hired man. He was calling just for the fun of it to see if worked. We talked for three minutes and when the bill came, it was five dollars per minute. It was a big deal having a phone in the car. A couple years later we traded the bag phone for a full...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

We’ve all had a lot of time to ourselves and our own thoughts during this pandemic. Whether it’s being alone in the bathroom doing our business, or sitting in a car for a drive when there is nothing good to listen to on the radio. For me, it is late at night after I have posted that evening’s story on the internet and have the house to myself for an hour or so when my wife and dog have already gone up to bed. Maybe it’s just because I tend to think differently, or maybe it’s some of my old st...

  • Pandemic Adaption

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

Most people are familiar with Charles Darwin and his theories of evolution. Simply put, a species must adapt to a new environment, or die. Well, the same axiom is true for business too – and with the quarantines and regulations imposed upon businesses during the pandemic, many have faced their own version of economic Darwinism – they needed to adapt if they wanted to keep the doors open. Now, we're not talking about large corporations – I could do a whole series on how small businesses were...

  • Obituaries

    Mar 10, 2021

Stockton Helga J. Revenaugh, 85 Helga J. Revenaugh passed away peacefully, after a brief illness, at her home on January 29, 2021. She was with her family and animals. She is dearly missed by all. She met life with perseverance, determination, contagious enthusiasm, compassion and optimism. Perhaps growing up in post-war Germany taught life-long attitudes that could be used to build rather than harm. It is fair to say, Helga (amongst many others) survived difficult and dangerous years. She was born March 7, 1935 in Bundheim, Germany. The... Full story

  • Fairgrounds Upgrading Water System

    Mar 10, 2021

The Stephenson County Fair Association (SCFA) held their monthly board meeting on Thursday, February 25 where a vote was passed to begin Phase 1 of upgrading the water lines on the fairgrounds. “I have been with the fair for many years,” quoted Gary Mielke, Board President, “and the current water lines have been in place for longer than I can remember. It is time to replace the old lines and put in new instead of just putting on a band aid year after year.” SCFA, a non-profit organization, was hesitant to take on such a large financial burden...

  • Consider Goodwill During Spring Cleaning

    Mar 10, 2021

Cleaning house, organizing closets and helping the environment are all good reasons to donate your gently used housewares and textiles to Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois this weekend! Goodwill is ready to accept housewares and textile donations at all of its eleven retail locations in the hopes the warm weather will jump start spring cleaning! Sales of housewares have been in demand in the community so if you have that extra set of dishes, lamp or toaster that you no longer use consider donating it to Goodwill. Donations not only help...

  • You're A Fan, Not A Ref

    Dan Stevens|Mar 10, 2021

While I'm certain the headline got some attention, the hope is that it might make an impression ... but I'm not holding my breath. As a reporter, the 2021 basketball season has been tedious – as it has for all of the teams themselves. But I have had the advantage of getting into every gym – unlike fans who only get to see home games in person. The biggest impression that had hit me this season (before Tuesday) was how all of the home team fans have adopted the River Ridge and Scales Mound cus...
