  • So Many Moments

    Dan Stevens|Mar 8, 2023

South Beloit had the ball with time ticking down in the second overtime, trailing by two, but with Sophomore Superstar, Ross Robertson, already with 35 points and looking for more. As the clock ticked below ten seconds to play, the pass went into the high post where Tyiion Jackson had been left alone – for a reason – all night. "That was all Jeff Korte," said Hornet senior Jacob Duerr. "He told me that if there was nobody on my side that I should jump that pass, so I jumped it." Duerr leaped up...

  • Hornets Have A Chance? Well Duerr!

    Dan Stevens|Mar 8, 2023

Fulton was bigger – a lot bigger – both in height and muscle mass. But the Hornets had a distinct advantage in two specific areas that proved pivotal in Friday's Sectional championship ... their guards were quicker, and they all make free throws. Fulton's Baylen Damhoff opened the game with a three, only to be matched by Thomas Hereau, as both teams battled it out trying to get a feel for the other's weakness. The Steamers tried to go over the top to their big man – Damhoff, and while they got s...

  • Lighter Side

    Mar 8, 2023

Changing to Daylight Savings on Sunday should always be followed by a national holiday on Monday. We lost an hour last night, but look on the bright side. We’re that much closer to Happy Hour. Daylight Savings – when all the appliance clocks in my house are showing the correct time again. At my age, I’m never sure I’ll get that “spring forward” hour back. I change the time on my alarm clock when I find out where it landed in the yard. Remember, it’s Spring forward, Fall back, and why the hell are we still doing this? It’s a shame Daylight...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Mar 8, 2023

Well, the female chauvinism of my household seems to know no bounds. As many of you know, my dog Bucky, is spoiled rotten – usually by yours truly. Just this past week we made our routine trip to see Pat Beckman at Cannova’s and – of course – Bucky was treated to a few pieces of Canadian Bacon. (Pat misses his dog that passed, and it has gotten to the point where my dog knows when we enter the parking lot that a ‘treat’ will soon be forthcoming) Fort lunch, I was in the mood for Culvers, so of c...

  • Voices All Area Girls Team

    Dan Stevens|Mar 8, 2023

The Galena Pirates dominated the region once again, and look like they will do it again next season – so we better ask the conference to break them up as a monopoly. But that doesn't mean the season was not an exciting one for our region as when all is put into perspective, we have the ultimate measuring stick to compare our local teams against. And while the coaches have released their all conference selections, it is time for us to reveal our picks for the Voices All Area Team. A few notes r...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Mar 8, 2023

Random Thoughts - Part 2 Time - It’s that time of year again - Daylight Saving Time (Saving - not Savings). The clocks go ahead in order to give us more daylight. But we all know moving the clocks around doesn’t add or take away any amount of time. We also know there is no such thing as making time or losing time. Time is constant. There are only so many hours of daylight in a day no matter where the hands of the clock are. Everyone has exactly the same amount of it. It is a resource the gov...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Mar 8, 2023

We all have an internal compass that guides our decisions and our behavior. And for those who seek public office, their ethical standards should be beyond reproach. Most people enter politics for the right reasons. They want to give back to their communities. They want good schools, or good parks or library systems. They see a problem and want to be part of the solution. These community leaders go about their work honestly, ethically, and with little fanfare. In Springfield, I work alongside...
