  • Killer Confidence

    Dan Stevens|Feb 26, 2020

Erin Henze was having a terrible game. Beyond terrible. By halftime of the Sectional semifinals against Stockton, Henze had zero points, but three turnovers and two fouls, and Stockton was in front 28-24. But they play two halves. "I've had bad shooting games before," Henze admitted. "But even when I'm off, coach Brinker tells me to keep shooting because even if I miss we have a good chance of coming down with the rebound." A pair of free throws in the third quarter shook her out of her funk,...

  • Falling On Deaf Ears

Roughly 250 to 300 people packed into the Stockton Gymnasium Tuesday night – filling up one side of the gym – but no, there was no basketball game. The boys were playing up in Scales Mound, so the fact that so many people made the trip in – rather than going to the game – said something in and of itself. The reason was to attend the Stockton School Board meeting, and voice their support for Superintendent Colleen Fox. The Board had never done an open vote "not" to renew Mrs. Fox, so that ha...

  • Coatney's Clutch

    Dan Stevens|Feb 26, 2020

With 1:25 to play in the Sectional finals between Eastland and Amboy, the Cougars were on the wrong end of a 56-52 score. But the game was far from over. Lydia Coatney drove into the lane, stopped and put up a jumper with her body twisted and contorted to try and square up to the basket. But just as every Eastland fan was beginning to groan, it went in to close the gap to two points at 56-54. On the next possession, sophomore Chloe Sweitzer paid big dividends as she once again smothered Mallory...

  • Bulldogs Hold On

    Dan Stevens|Feb 26, 2020

Coach Dr. Martin knew his team was in desperate need of a win. Not just any win, a quality win over a strong opponent. "You work so hard, but if you don't see a reward from that, losing can become a habit," Martin said. "It's a fine line every coach has to walk – how far do I push them without losing them?" After charging out to the 28-21 halftime lead against the Panthers on senior night in Lena, the Bulldogs looked like they were on the verge of blowing it open when Ben Hunziker hit his t...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Brian Stewart|Feb 26, 2020

In his second Budget Address to lawmakers, Gov. J.B. Pritzker unveiled a proposal that seeks $1.6 billion in new spending and makes some funding for priorities like education, health care and public safety contingent on the approval of his income tax increase. Let me repeat that. Pritzker’s message is that his tax increase must be approved in order to fund $1.4 billion for priorities like schools, health care and public safety. He is basically holding these programs hostage. For example, I...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Feb 26, 2020

It had been a long day – making the delivery of our paper throughout the region at local post offices, not to mention the rack box locations, and while I no longer had Speech practice to worry about, there were still ball games to cover and accounts to visit. So, to make a long story short, I didn’t get home until around 9:30 at night. I hung up my coat, trudged down the stairs to my man-cave office, exchanged tired grunts of hello with my wife, and walked through the laundry room into my small...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Feb 26, 2020

There was a new preacher in town in need of a lawn mower. Someone in his congregation heard about it and brought him over one that was well used. When it came time to cut the grass, the preacher got the mower out and attempted to get it started. When he was unable to do so, he got on the phone and called the guy who gave it to him and explained his dilemma. “Oh,” the guy said, “I forgot to tell you that if you can’t get it going right away you have to cuss at it while you’re pulling the rope....

Polo Regional Let's start with the easy one – Dakota will pound Leland in the opener, while Polo should be able to handle Hinckley Big Rock on Monday, then both Pecatonica and LaMoille should repeat the pattern of seeds holding firm on Tuesday.
