Both coaches knew going in that the pace would be slow, methodical, and quite possibly the first team to score 25 points would win. "I think we both knew we were putting our fans to sleep," said Stockton head coach John Hammann. "But that's typical Lena-Stockton basketball. It's physical, and it's a defensive slug fest where every possession's important." In all honesty, the game, itself, was a snoozer. In spite of eight lead changes, some hard fought scrambles for loose balls, and a free throw...
While the varsity Panthers were warming up for their game against Stockton, my attention was caught by a pair of little boys, Layne Richardson and Graham Schubert, who had moved down to the front row of the bleachers. With excited looks and eyes wide open, they were pointing to the various players as they went through their layup lines, when the thought got into their heads ... "Maybe we can get a hand slap from them." With hands outstretched, they called out to the players by name, and within...
Eastland Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, Tyler Zumdahl, got his 100th victory Wednesday night with a 56-27 blowout win over Forreston in Lanark. And by many respects, 100 wins is nice, but not that big of a deal ... except. When you think back to all of the successful basketball coaches Eastland has had over the years – Zumdahl got his 100th win faster than anybody before him. And when you realize that high school programs do not recruit, but are fed by the talent within the community, and f...
For Girls Basketball teams throughout the state, their final chance to polish their game came Thursday night because the Regional tournaments all tipped off on Saturday. For Eastland, with the conference already wrapped up, they got to host Amboy for a chance to get into post-season mode on their senior night. And while all of the seniors – even Mallory Miseiewicz who was nursing a turned ankle – got into the game, none of them had as big of an impact as Sarah Kempel. "She's my sweaty bea...

Editor; I am told there are referee shortages for youth sports in Illinois and we have witnessed it as a community. It isn’t just football or basketball but all youth sports. According to The New York Times, 50,000 referees quit between 2018 and 2021. A survey from Let ‘Em Play found that 80% of new referees quit within the first 2 years. There are multiple reasons for the departure of referees, but I want to bring to attention the abuse referees are exposed to. On April 22, 2022, www.axios.com reported that, “60% of officials surveyed in 20...

Bad managers don’t listen to their employees, because it makes them feel insecure when they find out the employees are smarter than they are. I’d tell my boss to go jump in a lake, but he’d probably just delegate that to me too. When my boss is mad and takes it out on me, I do less work. You can’t reward bad behavior with a positive response. Simmons, I don’t have time to write performance reviews, so from now on I’ll just criticize you in public from time to time. I heard you worked so hard you literally passed out for twenty minutes. So...

In Illinois, agriculture is a critical component of the state’s economy, with the industry providing over one million jobs for Illinois families. As bills begin moving through the 2023 legislative process in Springfield, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) will have a key voice on committees that will consider legislation that would impact this vital sector of the state’s economy. “It is a privilege to be assigned to the Senate Agriculture and Environment & Conservation Committees,” said Chesney. “The 45th Senate District is home to an ab...

Subjectivism and Objectivism in a culture of relative truth ... Digital communication has its advantages. Text messaging is easy and convenient. Convenient because you can choose to answer when it’s convenient for you to answer. Of course, anything can be read into any text message at any time. It’s difficult to show emotion and sarcasm in a text message and it is quite easy to unintentionally misrepresent yourself, which seems to happen to me fairly frequently. Of course, sometimes when you don...
As a kid, I used to love snow days off from school. You’d go to bed, knowing the forecast called for some heavy snow, but knowing that – all too often – the local school district would still have school, and you’d be stuck trudging down to the bus stop the next day anyway. But every once in a while, you’d get up early to get ready for school, and the scroll along the bottom of the local news broadcast on television listed your school district as being “closed”. That’s when the celebrations be...
