The IHSA announced on January 27th that they have devised a new sports schedule – allowing High School teams to put on some form of season during the 2020-20-21 School Year. For most of them, there will be no State Series – in other words, they might have a Regional, but there will not be a State Champion crowned. However, that is not the case – right now – for Baseball, Softball or Track. "Because the Spring sports lost out on their State Series last year, we do not want to rule out a second...
Lena-Winslow held their annual Spelling Bee contest to determine who would represent them at the big Regional contest held later this year. Each class competed to determine their respective three "grade" champions, and then the finals pitted all of the champions against each other to determine the top three Panther spellers. Claiming top honors was eighth grader Madelyn Schierloh, followed by eighth grader Alyssa Daughenbaugh and seventh grader Max Duncan. Individual grade champions were: 4th...

Everyone PLEASE be careful because people are going crazy from being locked down at home! I was just talking about this with the microwave and the toaster while drinking my coffee, and we all agreed that things are getting bad. I didn't mention any of this to the washing machine, because she puts a different spin on EVERYTHING!! Certainly couldn't share with the fridge, cause he's been acting cold and distant! In the end, the iron straightened me out! She said the situation isn't all that pressing and all the wrinkles will soon get ironed out!...
While most High School sports have seen their entire seasons put on hold, or hanging in the balance, the IHSA – and the State - have allowed competitive Speech to continue in a virtual format. In other words, while Golf only got a Regional and Sectional out of the deal, Speech is the one and only event currently allowed to have an entire State Series. All of that will begin this weekend as Speech teams in the region have had to choose the one and only entry to represent them in each of the 14 S...
Newly-compiled and shocking numbers related to the state’s vaccination rollout warrant the need for a clear explanation from the Pritzker Administration. Meanwhile, Senate Republican lawmakers are hosting a series of Zoom video conference calls with local law enforcement, as part of their continued “call to action” against controversial criminal justice reform legislation that could pose a risk to community safety. In other news, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) has annou...
Okay guys, Valentine’s Day is almost here, and if you’re lucky – you’ll got past it without too much pain. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-romance, or part of the, “He-man woman haters Club.” But every guy will readily admit that Valentine’s Day is not a holiday we look forward to, but instead - a hurdle we have to clear. First of all, who was the guy that invented Valentine’s Day anyway? I went to the History Channel website to find out, but it didn’t have an answer either. “Every Februa...
People often say we need to learn from history. People also say that “history repeats itself.” As of late, there are certain forces in our culture that want to cancel our country’s history and reinvent it to be what they think it ought to be. I like history - especially firsthand history from the first and second centuries in the days of the early church. Those people suffered for the cause of Christ, many, if not most of the writers of the New Testament died early deaths because of their faith...

Stephenson County Coroner, Timothy Leamon, resigned last week. In his formal letter to the Board, he stated "It is with a heavy heart that am submitting my resignation. I am grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to serve the residents of this great county. In 2007 I returned home from Iraq and battled with my PTSD. This was under control until I learned of the loss of additional squad members and began to battle my demons once again. I feel that it is in the best interest to myself...
Over the last 11 months, the nation’s healthcare focus has been on protection from the Corona virus and COVID-19. “And rightly so,” says Dr. Arif Ahmad, a cardiologist at Monroe Clinic. “In addition to staying vigilant in all ways of protecting ourselves from COVID-19, I would like to use the occasion of Heart Month to remind everyone how critical heart health is, especially during a pandemic.” Dr. Ahmad says patients with already-existing risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, face greater risks if they contract...
Readers may not be familiar with William H. Hills, but they should be. And last week efforts were made to honor the longtime Lena resident and World War II veteran who is currently residing at Oakley Courts in Freeport on his 97th birthday. Bill joined the Army back in 1942, and was originally a member of the Veterinary Corps working with dogs and mules, but was then transitioned to being a driver for the Colonel leading the setup of advanced Headquarter posts as the front advanced through the P...
