Everybody who has ever watched an Orangeville Bronco Girl's Basketball game this season knows – Laney Cahoon is their most dangerous player, and Nadalee Doyle is only one step behind. And while both of them had their typical double digit scoring performances, it was the play of the "X-factor," the supporting cast, that allowed them to pull away from Dakota 52-39 in NUIC North action. Dakota has been flying under the radar most of the season, but this team is young, and has some serious t...
At the risk of insulting Forreston ... (But I've done that before, so it's nothing new) – the Cardinals were not a very good basketball team when they played host to the annual Forreston Tournament before Christmas. But that was then. The Cardinals have steadily improved, and by taking down the Lena-Winslow Panthers on the road Thursday night, they have set themselves up to be the major competition to Dakota for second place in the NUIC North. "We've really worked hard on our transition game," s...
Stockton Girl's Basketball fans sat dumbstruck during the first half of their big conference show-down at home against RR/SM. Everybody knew the Wildcats would come in using their 1-2-2 full court press – Stockton knew it too ... but you'd never prove it. When a team makes 20 turnovers in a game, they typically lose. But Stockton made 20 turnovers in the first half! (Yes, you read that correctly. The Blackhawks had more turnovers in the first half than shots as the Wildcats were steam-rolling t...

It’s the dead of winter. If you don’t have to work outside, count your blessings. My dad always said the third week of January was the coldest week of the year. He wasn’t wrong. Last week we had frigid temperatures not only here but all over the entire U.S. It snowed as far south as Pensacola, Florida. New Orleans had 10 inches of snow and it even snowed in Houston, Texas. People in those parts of the country were out frolicking in the white fluff. We simply look forward to warmer tempe...
Okay guys, Valentine’s Day is almost here, and if you’re lucky – you’ll get past it without too much pain. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not anti-romance, or part of the, “He-man woman haters Club.” But every guy will readily admit that Valentine’s Day is not a holiday we look forward to, but instead a hurdle we have to clear. First of all, who was the guy that invented Valentine’s Day anyway? I went to the History Channel website to find out, but it didn’t have an answer either. “Every Februa...

"This is the exact kind of thing that will happen if we continue to create an issue out of every unsubstantiated accusation that comes along. We are going to lose more and more qualified people who do not want to be pulled down into the chaos that now surrounds this council. When all we have left are people who want to pull us down to their level, where does this leave the city?" Those words came from Mayor Jodi Miller in response to attorney Steve Cox withdrawing his name from consideration for...

Robert "Bing" Wells has already made his mark in Panther history. A 1963 graduate of Lena-Winslow High School, Wells has been the man behind the microphone at school competitions for over 50 years. The press box at the football field bears his name. So perhaps it's no surprise that Wells was one of first donors to the Lena-Winslow Stadium Project. "I was raised here. I helped raise my family here. I am blessed to be able to contribute to what I consider a worthy cause," said Wells. Building on t...
The 104th General Assembly is now in session, and in the coming weeks, thousands of bills will be filed in both the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives. These bills will shape the future of our state, with many reaching the floor for votes after being reviewed in committees. In a state where legislation often favors special interest groups over everyday citizens, it's more important than ever for residents to stay engaged and informed about the issues that matter most. Here are several...

There are a lot of factors that go into who wins and loses a basketball game, but the simplest one is scoring. A team with four players in double digit figures, typically wins against a team that only had two players reach double digit scoring. Such was the case as the Eastland Cougars used a big second half to run away from River Ridge in a 70-44 non-conference win. Early on, the game was close. Eastland was trying to run the Wildcats off the floor, but River Ridge likes to run too – and had o...
