  • Speaking Through Their Souls

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

The Lena-Winslow Lady Panthers got a big win over Aquin Wednesday night, and a major factor in the victory was the new implementation of a lob pass that was made by Alyssa Daughenbaugh into Grace Groezinger down on the block in the paint. "Oh yeah, I love making that lob," Daughenbaugh admitted. But how do you know when to throw it? Was Grace calling for it, or did you see something? "We speak to each other through our souls Dan," Groezinger said matter of factly. Whatever soul speaking was...

  • Keeping Our Options Open

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

Last Thursday's meeting of the Stephenson County Board took on some major issues head on, but the underlying message anybody who has followed the board over the years walked away with was ... this board is far more professional than many we've seen in the past. The biggest issue centered around Walnut Acres, the Stephenson County Nursing Home. Chairman, Scott Helms, brought up the elephant in the room – the resolution passed last year in which it had been agreed that if the Nursing Home could no...

  • Tip The Cap To Pec

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

The last time the Lena-Winslow Panthers had played against the Pecatonica Indians at the Forreston Tournament, it ended in a one point game. But Saturday in Pecatonica, in their first conference battle, the Indians brought their 'A' game. Most basketball teams make four, five, or six three point baskets over the course of a game. Some of the exceptional ones will make seven or eight. But to put Pecatonica's game into perspective, the Indians made ten three point bombs ... just in the first...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jan 25, 2023

A few weeks ago, I went on a one-day road trip to Kokomo, Indiana. I don’t follow a map anymore - just my GPS. The beauty of GPS is that if you take the shortest route, you usually end up on the backroads somewhere. Such was the case on this trip. It was early in the evening on the way home in gray, post-dusk December darkness. I was driving through Indiana on narrow roads that I had never been on before. On the outskirts of a small town in the middle of nowhere, a railroad crossing gate went d...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

I wanted to do something nice for my wife while she was up in northern Wisconsin playing grandma to the twerpers. Now, again, in an effort to prepare for the eventual move, my wife was very excited to be able to give the daybed that was up in her dressing room to Catie. So, the Friday before she left, I helped her carry the mattress and frame down and load it into the back of her car. “Then the futon I got from IKEA that’s in the basement? I’m going to need your help later to carry it upsta...

  • Lighter Side

    Jan 25, 2023

If my relationships were any more of a joke, I’d be dating the chicken that crossed the road. The most important part of any relationship, is the first open fart. You know that crucial moment on a first date when you realize you’d rather be home watching tv with your cat? Marriage is … always having someone to pity-laugh at your jokes. I don’t know where my prince charming is, but I’m already prepared for our first fight because he is super late. I was excited about my blind date with a man in uniform … until I found out he’s a Boy Scout Den...

  • In Charlie We Trust

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

The Scales Mound Hornets held a slim three point lead over the powerful Pecatonica Indians with two minutes left in their third place contest at the MLK Tournament. Desperate to get the ball, but forced to foul, the Indians fouled Hornet senior Charlie Wiegel, who stepped to the line for a one-and-one attempt, but missed the shot. Pecatonica came racing down the floor, but rushed a deep three point attempt as they tried to tie the game up all at once. The ball went long, where Max Wienen...

  • A Connection On The Court

    Dan Stevens|Jan 25, 2023

Last season, during their run to the State finals, the Scales Mound Hornets traveled to DeKalb for the Super Sectional. And after winning their game to punch the ticket to the State finals, they made a connection with the Glenbard West Hilltoppers – a 4A team that also won their Super Sectional game at DeKalb. As fate would have it, both teams were assigned to the same hotel in Champaign, and a friendship was formed between the respective players. The Hilltoppers were there in attendance, c...
